I just discovered a very sexually active friend of mine is pro-life. This seemed to resonate in a strange way for me. Although I support differing opinions and a person’s right to choose, I find people with large sexual appetites to be adamantly pro-life with no leeway in a woman’s right to choose, an interesting and narrow point-of-view. The fact that they so easily explore their sexuality and have a healthy sex life yet are against abortion makes me wonder if they’ve explored all possible results to their actions. It also makes me wonder how important it is to them if they don’t have aligning beliefs with their partner. Sleeping with a pro-choice female is most likely not going to end in the result you’re looking for in the case of pregnancy.
In general terms, people like to limit the discussion of abortion to an issue of morality. However, I believe it involves a lot more isuses than this simple one: many that are crucial yet often overlooked. The issue of bodily integrity (a woman’s right over the decisions regarding her body–an innate right that men never have questionned), situations of rape, incest and medical emergencies, and the social impact on mothers-to-be and mothers with young children. Considering these issues (and more) can shed a broader light on the true complexity behind abortion and the importance of exploring all these issues before making generally broad laws making abortion illegal.
Maybe more will be discussed in future posts. Hopefully this doesn’t offend. Again just an informed opinion on the topic.
